EMIM Combined: General Info
The combined Emergency Medicine / Internal Medicine residency program offers motivated residents the opportunity to acquire dual board certification and an unparalleled clinical training experience in an integrated five-year training program.
EM/IM residents have traditionally graduated to positions in academic medicine, although the majority of today’s graduates are choosing careers utilizing both aspects of their training. Graduates are uniquely poised to assume careers in critical care. Others elect to work as hospitalists or practice as internists, moonlighting in the ED for extra income. Dual training offers one the opportunity to engage in a training regimen of greater breadth and depth than either field offers individually. Many EM/IM residents choose to pursue further board certification in fellowships including critical care, cardiology, pulmonary, and toxicology. The combined EM/IM training program also uniquely prepares its graduates for careers in international health and medical humanitarian and disaster relief.
With the full support of the Internal Medicine Department, the Combined Emergency Medicine/Internal Medicine residency program at SUNY Downstate Medical Center was started in 2002 and accepts 4 residents per year. Further questions may be directed to Dr. Stephan Rinnert.
