The SUNY Downstate / Kings County Hospital Categorical Emergency Medicine Residency is a 4-year training program in Central Brooklyn, New York. Our residents rotate through two main hospital sites: Kings County, one of the largest urban, trauma hospital centers in New York City with an annual volume of approximately 140,000 ED visits per year. Along, with our affiliate institution of University Hospital of Brooklyn, which serves as a tertiary care center for transplant, dialysis, and cardiac patients.
The SUNY Downstate/ Kings County EM resident is exposed to an unparalleled clinical training in a county hospital that serves a diverse, immigrant patient population. Through the varied pathology, critical medical and trauma care in adults and pediatrics, along with the exposure to an array of sub-specialties in emergency medicine, our residents graduate not only capable of working in a variety of clinical environments, but also possess leadership skills which make them competitive candidates for employment. Our residents are trained to become astute clinicians and academicians using evidenced-based medicine to build on their practice as emergency physicians. We are affiliated with the SUNY Downstate College of Medicine, which produces the highest number of practicing physicians in the State of New York.
Our faculty come from a variety of training institutions, and many are fellowship trained, bringing their experiences from around the world to train the future leaders of emergency medicine. We offer bedside teaching, interdisciplinary team instruction, focused goal-directed ultrasound training, simulation, and leadership coaching. Our faculty are some of the most, well-respected emergency physicians, awarded for their work in servicing the local community through violence prevention, heralded as some of the top educators in emergency medicine, and acknowledged for their contributions to bettering the healthcare community throughout the world.
Our patients come from various countries, largely from the Islands of the West Indies, with a smaller population from Latin America, Asia, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe. We are dedicated to providing quality health care to our patients in their time of need. We serve as the safety net hospital for many of the medically underserved, and our department often is the first line of health care for many of our patients.
